Challenger Middle School

Sunnyside Unified School District

Tucson, Arizona

Install Date:

While working with the Drachman Institute, Iylea coordinated the design and installation of an activity courtyard at this local middle school.  The project helped transform a large expanse of gravel into an area for a variety of educational and social activities. Site features included a sand volleyball court, a community garden, and water harvesting basins with native trees and fruit trees.

The community garden included in-ground beds as well as self-watering container beds. Within months, the new garden beds were proving to be a great success. Read more.

The water harvesting basins with native trees help form areas where lunch tables are placed. In a few years the students and community will enjoy a lovely tree canopy.

Fruit trees planted were fig, pomegranate, limequat, and mandarin orange.
